At Discovery Academy, we believe that children learn their best when they are showing the Academy values of Discovering, Inspiring, Caring, Improving and Achieving within our curriculum. We believe in aspiration for all so want to create a world where the sky is the limit for all of our pupils; building pathways for all and focusing on personal and academic success and eventually progress to successful employment
Subject Intent: At Discovery Academy, we see the value in promoting a love for mathematics by using a heuristic approach; we understand that children can develop this love by empowering learners. It is our intention to allow children to succeed by enabling them to have conceptual understanding while at the same time having procedural fluency. We aim to deliver engaging Maths lessons that stimulate learners’ curiosity and develops their ability to reason and question confidently. Not only do we have a desire for our children to progress and attain at and above a national level, but we also want to instil a love of Mathematic which remains with them through to adulthood.
Implementation: We have a belief, based a multitude of research, that children learn best when they are allowed to problem solve and experience mathematics through a mastery approach. To enable learners, we ensure that we support the mastery approach by taking learners through the process of Concrete > Pictorial > Abstract. Within Maths lessons, children will be given the opportunity to apply and reason around the mathematical skills that they have been taught. When planning, we carefully map out the learning journeys for our children, taking into consideration summative and formative assessment and adjust our planning accordingly. Higher attaining learners will have the opportunity to access Greater Depth activities, which will allow them to further embed their understanding of the year group’s curriculum.
Non-negotiables:
Impact: Formative Assessment: Children will be assessed daily against clear learning challenges. Feedback should be given in order to allow children to progress further or address any misconceptions which may have arisen (see marking policy for further details).
Summative Assessment: Children will be assessed termly, in each year group each, on a test based upon the National Curriculum age-related expectation; this will also be used to inform future planning. Teachers will also assess their children against the statements based on the National Curriculum and how well the children are achieving within Maths; these judgements will regularly be moderated with peers and leaders in order to ensure their accuracy.
Children will also take regular times tables test in Years 3 and 4 in preparation for the MTC. By using child conferencing, we will receive feedback on children’s confidence in and enjoyment of Mathematics and tailor the curriculum accordingly to consistently enhance this.
