Year 4 Term: Autumn 1

Our learning this term:

English: During our first few weeks back, the children will focus on the book ‘Stories from the Billabong’ by James Vance Marshall. We will then write our own creation stories. Also this term, the children will be planning and writing a non-chronological report based around Discovery Academy and a diary entry based on D-Day Dog by Tom Palmer. To complete all of these, the children will be gathering a wide range of vocabulary and literacy skills.

Maths: Year 4 will begin by focusing on place value and ordering numbers. This will start with recapping from Year 3 concepts and then progressing to numbers to 10,000 for Year 4. The children will practice rounding large numbers to the nearest 10 and 100 and begin adding 4-digit numbers with and without exchanges.

Science: Why are teeth important?
This term, the children will be exploring teeth and how we can look after them. We will also be looking at the digestive system and the different stages of digestion.

History: In what ways do the Aboriginal Australian tribes you have studied differ from one another and the British society?
In History, we will be looking at the Aboriginal Australians and the history of how the Europeans settled in Australia. We will be exploring the Aboriginal culture and how that differs from other cultures.

Art: This half term, we will be looking at Storytelling through Drawing. The children will explore how illustrators create images for books based on the words written. We will also look at creating illustrations that then can add a storyline to each page.

Computing: What is the internet?The children will be exploring how the internet works, looking at networking and the difference between a website and a webpage. We will also be thinking if the internet is always a reliable source of information.

RE: What is it like for someone to follow God?
The children this term will explore the story of Noah’s Ark and the words used in a marriage ceremony. The children will focus on stories from the Bible and the importance around them.

Music: Can I talk about the structure within music?
In Music, children will be focussing on the structure of music and using a recorder to help play songs in an orchestral style.

PSHE: Our key focus this term will be relationships and how to enjoy our friendships but also what to do if we fall out. The children will learn key skills such as: learning how to resolve differences and collaborating effectively to create positive, healthy relationships.
Spanish: As well as focusing on the basics of the Spanish language, recapping the alphabet and the pronunciation of Spanish words. We will then go on to exploring how to say ways of presenting ourselves.

PE:
PE is twice a week on Tuesday and Thursday.
Your child will participate in a dance session and sports/gymnastics session every week. It is normally expected for children to have a full PE kit kept in school at all times as it may also be used for active lessons such as science or active maths.
Children should not be wearing any jewellery including earrings for PE. If your child does wear earrings, please could you ensure they are taken out before school on Tuesday and Thursday.

General Class Information:

Reading: The children will be given a reading journal for home. They will be given various reading books throughout the year and will be expected to read independently and complete tasks within their journal to earn a stamp which leads to a bigger reward. At least one task should be completed in the journal each week and they should be in school every day.
One child per half term will be nominated for being the Reading Hero for their class based on their commitment to home reading. The child will be chosen based on the evidence seen in their reading record and in class. If your child is chosen to be the class Reading Hero they will be given a prize and a certificate and acknowledged in Friday’s good work celebration assembly.

Homework:
• Task on Century due before Wednesday of each week – set on Friday.
• Read at home at least 3 times.
• Access TTRockstars twice for 10 minutes – 10 minutes on garage and 10 minutes on studio
Additional tasks may be provided to support children in filling various gaps in their learning to meet the Year 4 Curriculum guidance.

Any home learning that your children do independently which is additional to this (such as home projects, research, writing stories, practicing maths concepts etc.) will be rewarded with DoJo’s.

Snack: Snack is to be a piece of fruit or a cereal bar. No chocolate, crisps or sweets are allowed.
